Do not buy a bread machine if you like inexpensive store-bought generic bread (or if you are not well-disciplined in restricting your intake of superb-tasting bread). It is not worth the cost or effort. These machines are excellent for producing “artisan style” breads without all the questionable additives. The shelf life is much shorter, but this is never a problem because the bread vanishes so quickly.

If you are busy or in a hurry just let the machine do the job from start to finish checking and adjusting the moisture content when the additions signal sounds and centring the loaf after initial kneading ends. If you have time (and inclination) and want a traditional or special loaf shape set the machine to knead and rise and then hand work the final shape before baking it in the oven. Recipes always work well for me when I scoop flour and then shake it into a measuring cup (rather than scooping compacted flour with a measuring cup).

This bread machine has a large, good quality, heavy pan and 2 substantial paddles. I like the texture and size of the bread it produces. - Though they may be bigger than generic sliced breads, slices easily fit in a standard toaster. There are plenty of standard options to bake many different types of bread and 3 fully programmable settings which enable you to address every variation possible (that I can think of).

The instruction book is fairly comprehensive for basic recipes and also includes many interesting recipes. Allowing ten minutes at room temperature ensures easy removal of loaves on most occasions. After some 2+ years of very heavy use the non-stick surface remains intact and still works well.

Unlike other machines the motor does not slow down with heavy ingredients. It is vital to monitor the kneading process occasionally, since there is no feedback from a slowing motor if the mix is too dry - the motor maintains the same speed whatever the contents. In fact (compared to the 5 other (brands of) bread-makers I have owned over the last 15 or more years) this machine gives the impression that it could mix concrete quite capably.

What’s not to like about this machine? More “head-space”over the loaf would reduce the need for occasional cleanups. You must centre the dough if lop-sided loaves are to be avoided (as in all horizontal-panned machines). The price is rather steep (although less than half that of my first machine).

Because of its quality, the strength of the motor, and the ready availability of parts from the manufacturer’s website I expect this machine to last much longer than any of its predecessors.

This machine merits a score of 4.7 out of 5. Despite not being perfect, I thoroughly recommend it.

what a relief. our bread machine bit the dust last month and i thought i was going to have to replace it. i saw this replacement belt and decided to give it a try. i took the bottom pannel off of the bottom of the bread machine and low and behold the belt was worn out. it took about 10 days to get the replacement and about 15 minutes total to repair. i was making bread that night.

We had been hesitant to purchase a bread machine as reviews for all products range from wonderful to horrid. We finally decided on the West Bend 41200 because of the low price, the flexibility of multiple size loaves and the additional dough and jam features.In the month since purchase, we have used the bread machine 10 times, making 4 different types of breads ranging from traditional white to beer/jalapeno/cheese, sweet breads, pizza dough and jam. We have no complaints. Using the bread machine is actually easier than you are led to believe. All recipes say you must measure exactly, only use the ingredients listed and follow step by step. This is not true. We have modified recipes slightly by adding/reducing liquid if the dough or the proportions do not seem proper, we have substituted ingredients; using all-purpose flour, not bread flour; substituting an equal amount of skim milk in place of the water and dry milk; etc. We find no appreciable difference in the quality of the product. Focus Electrics, owner of the West Bend name, has a wonderful recipe book on their website: [...]We are so pleased with the West Bend 41200 we will be purchasing many more for wedding and holiday gifts.

I have never owned a bread machine before and received this model as a birthday gift. I am extremely happy with it so far. I’ve probably made about 10 loaves over the past couple months and I have never had a problem.

It would be nice if there was a “reset” button so that if you accidentally start a baking cycle and want to change the settings, you wouldn’t have to unplug the machine for ten minutes, but I can’t think of anything else I’d change.

I love having a bread machine. I think I misunderstood the concept of “quiet” because I think this is loud. It is my first bread machine so I have no comparison but my kitchen is separate from my TV room and it is disruptingly loud. My son came downstairs to see what noise was. On the other hand, I have made two loaves of bread that my family seems to love.

I received my bread maker in the promised time and it was packed very well with no damage to the carton.

This is my second Toastmaster Bread Maker. My original one was an old style vertical loaf but the bread was excellent and the bread maker lasted for several years. I sometimes used it as often as 5 times a week. That influenced me to purchase another Toastmaster. I have had it for 4 weeks and have used it several times. The one thing I do not like is that the recipes in the new book do not turn out well for me. The bread is coarse-textured and the taste just is not right. I then tried the recipes from my old Toastmaster and they are excellent, just as they were in the old bread maker. Because of the horizontal loaf shape and only one paddle for mixing, I have discovered that the flour is cleaned from the sides of the pan better by using a teaspoon or two extra of water to make the dough just a little more sticky than was needed with the old bread maker. The loaf is also more rounded and smooth on top.

I would purchase this product again.

I received my West Bend 41200 Bread Machine several weeks ago and have not been disappointed! I have produced 5 loaves from it so far - about 1 a week. All have come out perfect despite my imprecise measurements and in one case, my outright mistake for one ingredient’s quantity. I bought it because I wanted standard, horizontal loaves instead of the odd-size vertical loaves my old Welbilt produced.

First, the shortcomings:
1. Skimpy manual does not have many recipes and is missing 1 pound loaf recipe (I have shared mine below).
2. Although pan stays in place well, it does not have a “positive lock” feel. Time will tell if this will become a problem.

Some things to note:
1. Alarm to add nuts or other ingredients is very loud and cannot be bypassed.
2. Done alarm is very quiet. You may need to set your own reminder alarm if you are not close by.
3. The 1 pound loaf setting produces loaves that are the closest to purchased bread size. The 1 1/2 pound loaf setting produces a taller bread slice that is fine for toast or spreads but your hotdog or burger might get a bit lost in it. I can’t imagine making a 2 pound loaf.
4. Manual mentions that it has the ability to make it through short-term power interruptions (less than 5 minutes). I have not tested this myself.
5. Takes up about a 12 x 14 inch footprint on your counter.

What I like the best:
1. Perfect light, airy loaves without needing precise measurement techniques. My old Welbilt bread machine was *very* picky about the ingredient measurement and even then, would still produce poor loaves on occasion. With this one, I just scoop the flour with the measuring cup and use reasonable care with the other ingredients.
2. Much quieter than my old machine. You can actually be in the same room with it and not need to turn up the volume on the television or your voice.
3. Crust control works well. Light crust is actually very light.
4. Large viewing window - much larger than any bread machine I have ever seen. It is oval and about 6.5 x 5.5 inches.
5. Stable on the counter with absolutely no tendency to “walk” around during kneeding. Note that I have not tried the 2 pound loaf setting.

I have only tried a few of the settings that this machine possesses. I have only made 1 1/2 and 1 pound loaves on the basic bread setting. I use white flour mixed with whole wheat flour. I have tried the light and medium crust settings (both worked exactly as I expected) but not the dark setting. I have not tried the timed setting yet.

I live near Denver (mile high city) so the high altitude can cause bread to crater. I have been adding in a couple of teaspoons of vital wheat gluten to the general purpose flour I have been using and have had no trouble with cratering.

The manual has 1 1/2 pound and 2 pound recipes but no 1 pound recipe. I borrowed the recipe from my old bread machine manual and it worked perfectly. Here is is:

1 Pound Basic Bread Loaf Recipe
Water: 3/4 cup
Oil: 4 tsp
Sugar: 4 tsp
Salt: 1 tsp
Flour: 2 1/4 cup
Yeast: 1 1/2 tsp

On my second 1 pound loaf, I dumped the whole yeast package in, forgetting to measure out just 1 1/2 teaspoon. The loaf still came out perfect.

In conclusion, I’m very happy with my machine although I have only been making basic bread and have not used the timer yet. Long-term durability still has to be determined.

I tried making wheat bread twice and sweet bread once. Something was off with the digital program because for one loaf it kept cycling back to knead over and over, while for another loaf it overbaked it. None of the three loaves rose properly or they rose and fell.

I called the company (Focus Electrics) and they are sending a new breadmaker. I hope it will work.
